Position Title:
Stream Stewardship Interns
Field Site Name:
Cairo, NY

Hi! We are Emily Ramlow and Lilly Stewart. We are working as stream stewardship interns at the Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District in Cairo, NY. Our work involves stream restoration and riparian plantings in the Schoharie Watershed which provides drinking water for New York City. So basically, when you drink a glass of delicious, refreshing water tap water in New York City, that water fell on the lush green mountain slopes of the Catskills, trickled down mountain streams, was filtered through soil and roots in mountain valleys, rushed into the rivers, settled in a reservoir and then was piped over 200 miles into the city. Amazingly, this invaluable water supply is completely unfiltered, and that’s where we come in. We work to ensure that the streams of the Catskills are as healthy as possible so that they can continue to provide good clean drinking water to millions of New Yorkers.
